Grantee Event: Dance Institute of Washington Presents “The Spirit of Kwanzaa”
December 16, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - December 17, 2022 @ 9:00 pm
$25The Spirit of Kwanzaa, the Dance Institute of Washington’s most popular and longest-running (since 1995) cultural arts and dance production affords the community an immersive and imaginative presentation that uniquely shows the African American winter holiday celebration, drawing on the agricultural ceremonies of Africa. The Dance Institute of Washington has adopted the seven principles of Kwanzaa into rich storytelling presented by student and professional dancers and other performing artists through dance, music, drumming, spoken word, singing, and live video, portraying the struggles, resilience, and creativity within the Black experience. Dr. Abiola of Howard University will speak to kick off opening night, giving a rich humanities presentation on the cultural legacy of Kwanzaa and its relationship to African American and African Diasporic dance and music. She will touch on the theme of a “Celebration of Life and Harmony” in her introductory presentation before the humanities-rich concert.
