Linda Leaks and the DC Limited Equity Cooperative Movement Teach-In

November 2 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Join Douglass Center fellow Jess Rucker and The People’s Archive for an intentionally intergenerational learning experience:

Linda Leaks and the DC Limited Equity Cooperative Movement: A Teach-in seeks to deepen participants’ knowledge of the long and ongoing struggle for safe, decent, and affordable housing in the nation’s capital, the day-to-day grassroots work it involved from the late 1970s through the early 2000s, and the central leadership of Black working-class women, like Linda Leaks, in the DC LEC movement. Known locally as the “Godmother of DC Housing Cooperatives,” Leaks serves as an important theoretical and political figure. The event will extend access to this critical history at a moment when it has great value, as the nation’s capital continues to be one of the most rapidly gentrifying cities in the United States. At the teach-in, humanities scholars, activists and organizers, and DC area educators will engage in three learning experiences—a moderated roundtable, small group discussions, and a collective share back session designed to amplify this vital movement.
