Playwrights of the Black Arts Movement
February 19, 2023 @ 11:00 am - 6:00 pm
$125Arena Stage dramaturg and Yale lecturer Otis Cortez Ramsey-Zöe leads this one-day master class exploring the playwrights of the Black Arts Movement and their impact on today’s writers. The day begins with an exploration of the cultural moment of the 1970s and 80’s and spirit of protest that sparked this influential time in history. Participants will then discuss how writers emerged from this environment, and the work of specific playwrights including Sanchez, Bullins and Baraka and their relationship to the resistance, self-determination, and protest. Through readings and discussions, participants will gain an understanding of the aesthetic and social concerns of this time period, their effect on the stage, and influence on contemporary American playwrights like Wilson, Nottage, and McCraney.
