Each year, in advance of the DC Community Heritage Project Grant cycle, we offer a series of brief workshops outlining the application process, describing the program’s funding preferences, and encouraging community history minded people to network and discuss their work. We highly recommend that all first time applicants attend one of the sessions. This year’s workshops will focus on grants and oral history.
The DC Community Heritage Project Grant supports community groups, ANCs, churches, service organizations, neighborhood historical organizations, and others interested in telling the stories of Washington, DC’s neighborhoods, landmarks, and culture. The $2500 grants are awarded in June, and projects are completed by October. All grantees produce interpretive products which are displayed at a community showcase in December. Applications must be submitted by 11:59pm on May 6th. Please check the DCCHP grants web page for additional eligibility requirements, or contact Director of Grants and Special Projects, Louis Hicks at email@example.com or 202-387-8391.
Bonus Oral History Best Practices Workshops:
This year’s workshops will come with the added bonus of oral history best practices workshops led by experienced oral historians and scholars. The oral history workshops will cover project planning basics, interview techniques and recording skills.
Oral history, when thoughtfully undertaken, can be a powerful way for people to preserve the memories, and experiences of their communities, and to create invaluable resources for historians and other scholars’ future research.
These two and a half hour workshops will give attendees an idea of how they can get their oral history projects funded, and how they can be conducted in a way that will enhance their worth and their likelihood of being transmitted to future generations.
The workshops are completely free and open to the public. Each session will begin with the grants portion which will last a little less than an hour, and close with the oral history portion. Though we hope you’ll join us for both, you may choose to attend one or the other.
