SUMMARY:Culture Series: Pieces of Me - Music\, Memory and Club Photography
DESCRIPTION:HumanitiesDC’s Culture Series is excited to announce the first event in our summer series line-up with guest curator Dr. Natalie Hopkinson. \nNothing beats the magic of live music—especially go-go: the vibration\, the movement\, the fashion\, the people\, the memories you create at the club. When you stop by to see the “Pictureman\,” you come away with a priceless memento that unlocks a million stories. \nThis conversation on June 22 asks the question: What does the scene look like from the perspective of those looking through the camera lens? Who designs the dramatic backdrop for the absolutely essential Polaroid keepsakes? What does this wealth of imagery mean for current efforts to document and preserve the history of go-go–DC’s treasured musical genre? \nJoin us for music and good conversation as a panel of photographers\, curators and scholars explore the visual side of go-go. Complimenting the voices of the panel will be several of those who were interviewed for oral histories about go-go portraiture and photography. \nCurated by Dr. Natalie Hopkinson\, author of Go-Go Live and creator of Pieces of Me: Go-Go Club Photography Archival Initiative. Panelists include: \n\nLatoya Peterson Blacks in AI\, Glow Up Games \nMaleke Glee Curator + Director of Stable Arts \nThomas Sayers Ellis Photographer\, author “Maverick Room” \nDr. Symone Campbell Interviewer Go-Go Portraiture Archival Project Maleke Glee\, Curator and Director of Stable Arts\n\nMr. G aka The Godfather of Club Photography will be on hand to take portraits of those in attendance. \nEvent Details\nHost: HumanitiesDC\nDate: June 22\, 2023 • 7pm\nLocation: Busboys and Poets on 2021 14th St NW\, Washington\, DC 20009\nEvent fee: Free\nRegistration Event link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/culture-series-pieces-of-me-music-memory-and-club-photography-tickets-632706822137 \nFor More Information\nContact: Jimmy Watkins\nWebsite: humanitiesdc.org\nEmail: info@dcdoxfest.com\nPhone: 202.770.3077 Ext. 806
