SUMMARY:Culture Series: Intergenerational Oral Histories of DC’s Ethiopian Community
DESCRIPTION:In this inaugural event in HumanitiesDC’s Culture Series\, writer\, producer and cultural worker Saaret E. Yoseph presents her multi-faceted\, intergenerational oral history project JOURNEY(S): Addis to DC. SUMMARY:The Sacred Imagined: Portraits of Afrodescendant Spirituality on Screen
DESCRIPTION:This interactive screening and panel discussion featuring short works and film selects from Haiti\, Brazil\, Jamaica\, and the US will explore the imaginative representation of Afro-descendant spiritual practices and the personal pathways of filmmakers—across cultural geographies. SUMMARY:Before Gentrification: The Creation of DC’s Racial Wealth Gap
DESCRIPTION:In this presentation\, Dr. Tanya Golash-Boza will explain how a century of redlining\, disinvestment\, and the War on Drugs wreaked devastation on Black people and paved the way for gentrification in Washington\, DC. She will describe the cycles of state abandonment and punishment that have shaped the city\, revealing how policies and policing work to displace and decimate the Black middle class. She will also explore how DC came to be the nation’s “Murder Capital” and incarceration capital\, and why it’s now one of the most gentrified cities in the country. This troubling history makes clear that the choice to use prisons and policing to solve problems faced by Black communities in the twentieth century—instead of investing in schools\, community centers\, social services\, healthcare\, and violence prevention—is what made gentrification possible in the twenty-first. This talk will unveil a pattern of anti-Blackness and racial capitalism in DC that has implications for all US cities. \nEvent Details\nHost: Tanya Golash-Boza\, Ph.D. \nDate: January 25\, 2023 @ 12:00pm – 1:00pm \nLocation: Virtual \nEvent fee: Free \n  \nFor More Information\nContact: Shae Corey\, Programs Manager \nWebsite: https://dcpreservation.org/ \nEmail: shae@dcpreservation.org \nPhone: 202-783-5596

SUMMARY:DC Oral History Collaborative: Oral History 101+
DESCRIPTION:This course\, led by Anna F. Kaplan\, PhD.\, will introduce Washingtonians interested in becoming oral historians to the best practices of doing oral history\, to empower them with the basic tools for developing their style and approach to preserving DC’s rich past through oral history interviews.\nThis course is structured to follow the full cycle of an oral history interview\, from conception to processing. We will discuss practical and theoretical considerations of doing oral history in order to demonstrate the distinctive\, interdisciplinary mindset that oral historians take to their work. Because oral history is best learned “on the job\,” the instructor will ask you to do activities and to discuss your experiences along the way.\nThere is a lot of material to cover\, so participants will also be asked to do some reading and exercises prior to each session. \nThis workshop consists of three sessions – registrants must commit to participating in all three sessions. \nEvent Details\nHost: Anna F. SUMMARY:Grantee Event: The Meaning Behind the Music
DESCRIPTION:The Washington Arts Ensemble is DC’s classical music community\, offering classical chamber music concerts with an emphasis on connection between audience members and performers. In keeping with holiday celebrations around the globe\, our December concert will explore how various composers found meaning in music\, whether it be through tradition\, worship\, or simply gratitude and purpose. Highlights will include the solo cello suites of the great J.S. Bach\, and several solo piano works: the Vingt Regards of Oliver Messaien\, who was a prisoner of war during WWII in France\, and Corpus Christi en Sevilla by Spanish composer Issac Albeniz. The concert will close with Felix Mendelssohn’s second piano trio\, an homage to the role of the spiritual in his life. Pianists and cofounders Christopher Schmitt and Natalia Kazaryan will be joined by series regular cellist Joseph Gotoff\, and the young prodigious talent of Bulgarian/Japanese violinist Julia Angelov. The concert will take place at the historic Arts Club of Washington\, and tickets include receptions both before and after the concert with hors d’oeuvres and an open wine and beer bar. \nEvent Details\nType: Performance \nHost: Washington Arts Ensemble\, featuring cofounders of the Washington Arts Ensemble\, Christopher Schmitt\, Pianist and Natalia Kazaryan\, Pianist; with Joseph Gotoff\, Cellist\, Faculty Levine School\, Towson University; and Julia Angelov\, Colburn School \nDate: December 15\, 2022 @ 6:30-9:30pm \nLocation: Arts Club of Washington 2017 I St. NW\, Washington DC 20006 \nEvent Fee: $20-$65\, Purchase tickets HERE. \n  \nFor More Information\nContact: Christopher Schmitt\, Pianist and Cofounder \nWebsite: washingtonartsensemble.org \nEmail: info@washingtonartsensemble.org \nPhone: 571.235.4276
