SUMMARY:The Camouflage Kippa: 40th Anniversary of the 1983 Beirut Barracks Bombing
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the National Museum of American Jewish Military History as we remember the 40th anniversary of the tragic 1983 Beirut barracks bombing with Rabbi Arnold Resnicoff. On October 23\, 1983\, a suicide driver detonated two bombs at buildings in Beirut\, Lebanon\, housing American and French service members. 241 U.S. military personnel were killed. U.S. Navy Chaplain Rabbi Arnold Resnicoff was there and immediately began helping wounded Marines. In order to wipe away blood and dirt\, Resnicoff had used his own kippa. Catholic Chaplain Father George Pucciarelli\, seeing Rabbi Resnicoff without his head covered\, tore off the top piece of his Marine camouflage cap\, and brought it over to Resnicoff to wear. This spirit of interfaith cooperation is at the foundation of the military chaplaincy and it continues to inspire Rabbi Resnicoff. His report of the attack and its aftermath\, written at the request of the White House\, was read as a keynote speech by President Ronald Reagan. Rabbi Resnicoff is a retired U.S. Navy Chaplain\, former National Director of Interreligious Affairs for the American Jewish Committee\, and former Special Assistant to the Secretary and Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force for Values and Vision. His Naval career started in the rivers of Vietnam followed by Naval Intelligence in Europe before rabbinical school and ordination. He was part of the small group of Vietnam veterans that worked to create the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and convinced the US military to participate in the US Days of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust. He was the first chaplain to teach a course at a U.S. military war college: “Faith and Force: Religion\, War\, and Peace\,” at the Naval War College\, in Newport\, RI. Howard Mortman is the author of When Rabbi Bless Congress. He is communications director for C-SPAN\, the public service providing television coverage of the U.S. Congress. A veteran of Washington\, DC\, media organizations\, he has observed Congress from positions at MSNBC\, National Journal’s Hotline\, Broadcasting Board of Governors\, and New Media Strategies. \nEvent Details\nHost: National Museum of American Jewish Military History\nDate: October 22\, 2023 • 2 – 3:30PM\nLocation: 1811 R St NW Washington\, DC 20009\nEvent fee: Free\nRegistration Event link: https://resnicoff.eventbrite.com \nFor More Information\nContact: Michael Rugel\nWebsite: https://resnicoff.eventbrite.com\nEmail: mrugel@nmajmh.org\nPhone: 202-265-6280

SUMMARY:AARON BURR\, SIR: The Duel for Democracy
DESCRIPTION:This Theater and Policy Salon tells a story of parallel turning points in America’s troubled journey to a more perfect democracy – the 1804 Hamilton-Burr duel and the January 6 riot – then digs into the issues facing our democracy today. This free event (no rsvp required) kicks off with an exclusive sneak peak at a new play Across the River which introduces Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton as “brothers (and orphans) from another mother.? Tragically\, ego and honor drove these Revolutionary War frenemies to mutual destruction. The duel wiped out both Yankee powerhouse pols and left pro-slavery southern Presidents to fill the power vacuum – and the White House- right up until the Civil War. Afterwards\, join a public conversation with DC democracy activists and experts on African-American history\, America’s flawed democracy\, and January 6 Capitol event. \n\nThis event will have a distinguished panel featuring eminent scholar of Congress Norm Ornstein\, Professor Ravi Perry of Howard University and DC Vote\, and U.S. Capitol Historical Society (CHS)’s Steve Livengood\, all moderated by CHS President/CEO Jane Campbell. \n\n\n\nThis program has been funded in part by a grant from HumanitiesDC. \n\n\nEvent Details\nHost: Theater and Policy Salon\nDate: October 19\, 2023 • 6:30PM – 8PM\nLocation: Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library\, 901 G St NW\, Washington\, DC 20001\nEvent fee: Free\nRegistration Event link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/aaron-burr-sir-the-duel-for-democracy-tickets-719259774347 \nFor More Information\nContact: Michael Feldman\nWebsite: humanitiesdc.org\nEmail: mfeldman@mfeldman.net \nPhone: 202-277-6486

SUMMARY:Gilded Lily Burlesque: Return to Glamour
DESCRIPTION:The sparkle of a rhinestone in the spotlight. The hypnotic shimmy of fringe across the hips. The caress of a silk stocking along the leg. This year’s Return to Glamour is a celebration of returns: the return of live burlesque\, the return of glitz and glamour\, and the return of Gilded Lily to DC! Gilded Lily’s goal for inclusivity also feeds into its mission for diversity in Baltimore burlesque\, where performers of color and LGBTQIA+ suffer from a lack of visibility. The troupe sees its medium as a ripe platform for social discourse\, as well as advocacy and activism. Burlesque is meant to be fun\, entertaining and maybe just a bit irreverent\, but consent always matters to both performers and the audience! So laugh out loud\, cheer\, hoot and holler\, and always be sure to obtain permission before touching or interacting with the performers. \nEvent Details\nHost: Dance Place\nDate: October 14\, 2023 • 8:00-10:00PM\nLocation: Dance Place 3225 8th Street NE Washington\, DC 20017\nEvent fee: General Admission: $30.00\, Seniors: $25.00\, Artists and College Students: $20.00\, and Kids: $10.00\nRegistration Event link: https://www.danceplace.org/performances/gilded-lily-burlesque/ \nFor More Information\nContact: Julianna Raimondo\nWebsite: https://www.danceplace.org/performances/gilded-lily-burlesque/\nEmail: juliannar@danceplace.org\nPhone: 202.269.1600

SUMMARY:Culture Series: Discovering Medieval DC
DESCRIPTION:Walking Tour: 6:30PM\, meet at the Joan of Arc Statue in Meridian Hill \nEvent: 7:00PM at Busboys \nThe Middle Ages may seem far distant in time and space\, and far removed from contemporary concerns for those of us who live in twenty-first century DC. Yet\, the medieval surrounds us\, in objects held in DC-area collections\, modern ideas\, local architecture\, and in the motifs that continue to shape our world today. Join Humanities DC and the Medieval DC team to discover the hidden world in our city. \nWe will begin in Meridian Hill Park\, which features a statue of the French heroine Joan of Arc. Why is there a statue of a poor French girl who upended French and English history in a park in Washington DC? Rather than a strange anomaly\, the Joan statue is just one of many examples of how the global Middle Ages continues to be relevant today. After our guided visit to the statue\, the group will move to Busboys and Poets for a discussion and trivia contest exploring the Middle Ages in DC. We will present the DC Humanities grant-funded Guide to Medieval DC\, a web resource hosted by the Catholic University of America\, meant to introduce Medieval DC to educators and the general public. We will view one of the videos created for the project and discuss it with the project’s videographer. Finally\, we’ll end our night with a Medieval DC trivia game. Please join us to explore and celebrate the medieval in DC. \nEvent Details\nHost: HumanitiesDC\nDate: September 21\, 2023 • 6:30PM\nLocation: Busboys and Poets 2021 14th St. NW Washington\, DC 20009\nEvent fee: Free\nRegistration Event link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/culture-series-discovering-medieval-dc-tickets-703488833037?aff=oddtdtcreator \nFor More Information\nContact: Jimmy Watkins\nWebsite: humanitiesdc.org\nEmail: info@dcdoxfest.com\nPhone: 202.770.3077 Ext. 806

SUMMARY:DC Oral History Collaborative 101+ Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This course\, led by oral historian Benji de la Piedra\, will introduce Washingtonians interested in becoming oral historians to the best practices of doing oral history\, to empower them with the basic tools for developing their style and approach to preserving DC’s rich past through oral history interviews. \nThis course is structured to follow the full cycle of an oral history interview\, from conception to processing. We will discuss practical\, ethical\, and theoretical considerations of doing oral history in order to demonstrate the distinctive\, interdisciplinary mindset that oral historians take to their work. Because oral history is best learned “on the job\,” the instructor will ask you to do activities and to discuss your experiences along the way. \nThere is a lot of material to cover\, so participants will also be asked to do some reading and exercises prior to each session. \nThis workshop consists of three sessions – registrants must commit to participating in all three sessions. \nThe Collaborative is a unique partnership between HumanitiesDC and the DC Public Library\, started in 2017\, that incorporates grant funding\, trainings\, coaching and other resources to help residents document\, preserve\, and celebrate the history of all DC communities\, specifically through oral history. Many of the narratives collected are preserved in the People’s Archive at the DC Public Library\, and available to the public. To date\, nearly 400 narratives have been collected through the Collaborative. \nEvent Details\nHost: HumanitiesDC\nDate: September 5\, 7\, 12\, 2023 • 6:30PM – 8:30PM\nLocation: Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library\, 4th Floor Conference Space\, 901 G Street NW\, Washington\, DC 20001\nEvent fee: Free\nRegistration Event link: https://OHWorkshopFall2023.eventbrite.com  \nFor More Information\nContact: Jasper Collier\nWebsite: humanitiesdc.org\nEmail: jcollier@humanitiesdc.org\nPhone: 202 – 770 – 3077 ext. 804
