SUMMARY:Culture Series: Discovering Medieval DC
DESCRIPTION:Walking Tour: 6:30PM\, meet at the Joan of Arc Statue in Meridian Hill \nEvent: 7:00PM at Busboys \nThe Middle Ages may seem far distant in time and space\, and far removed from contemporary concerns for those of us who live in twenty-first century DC. Yet\, the medieval surrounds us\, in objects held in DC-area collections\, modern ideas\, local architecture\, and in the motifs that continue to shape our world today. Join Humanities DC and the Medieval DC team to discover the hidden world in our city. \nWe will begin in Meridian Hill Park\, which features a statue of the French heroine Joan of Arc. Why is there a statue of a poor French girl who upended French and English history in a park in Washington DC? Rather than a strange anomaly\, the Joan statue is just one of many examples of how the global Middle Ages continues to be relevant today. After our guided visit to the statue\, the group will move to Busboys and Poets for a discussion and trivia contest exploring the Middle Ages in DC. We will present the DC Humanities grant-funded Guide to Medieval DC\, a web resource hosted by the Catholic University of America\, meant to introduce Medieval DC to educators and the general public. We will view one of the videos created for the project and discuss it with the project’s videographer. Finally\, we’ll end our night with a Medieval DC trivia game. Please join us to explore and celebrate the medieval in DC. \nEvent Details\nHost: HumanitiesDC\nDate: September 21\, 2023 • 6:30PM\nLocation: Busboys and Poets 2021 14th St. NW Washington\, DC 20009\nEvent fee: Free\nRegistration Event link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/culture-series-discovering-medieval-dc-tickets-703488833037?aff=oddtdtcreator \nFor More Information\nContact: Jimmy Watkins\nWebsite: humanitiesdc.org\nEmail: info@dcdoxfest.com\nPhone: 202.770.3077 Ext. 806
