Kelly Navies, Oral History Specialist at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, will discuss the practice of oral history and how it can be used to support and deepen family history research. Navies will share oral history clips from her work at the NMAAHC and other institutions, as examples of oral history methodology and content. There will also be interactive exercises.
Kelly Elaine Navies
Kelly Elaine Navies is an oral historian, writer, and poet. As Museum Specialist in oral history, she coordinates the Oral History Initiative at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Navies has degrees in African American Studies and Library and Information Science from the University of California, Berkeley and the Catholic University of America, respectively. She has also studied at the Southern Oral History Program (SOHP) at UNC Chapel Hill. Navies’ oral history projects and interviews are located at the SOHP, The Reginald F. Lewis Maryland Museum of African American History and Culture, the Washington DC Public Library Peoples’ Archive, and at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. Her writing may be found in several publications including, June Jordan’s Poetry for The People: A Revolutionary Blueprint, edited by Lauren Muller and Bum Rush the Page: A def poetry jam, edited by Tony Medina and Louis Reyes Rivera. Finally, she is the First VP of the Oral History Association.
About the DC Oral History Collaborative
The DC Oral History Collaborative (DCOHC) is a partnership between HumanitiesDC and the DC Public Library. DCOHC was created in 2017 as an ambitious city-wide initiative aimed at documenting and preserving the history of Washington’s residents and communities through oral history. The Collaborative is a multi-faceted program that includes grantmaking, training, and public projects.
